Earbuds Gesture - how do I turn them off?

I want to know how to turn the earbuds off. There is no indication of how to do this in the manual.

I don't want to turn them off by putting them in the case to charge because I don't want to keep charging the battery to full (that puts wear on the battery and reduces battery life).

Is there a way of actually turning them off short of disconnecting them from my phone and having them go into some kind of auto shut down state (if they even do that?).

I tried that and it didn't work. It just kept launching the phone assistant. Then I realized that I had to disconnect the earbuds from my phone first and then hold that area, and it finally worked. Thanks.
